As Singapore balances metropolitan life with traditional beliefs, joss paper burning — the practice of igniting paper money and objects of wealth to send to deceased ancestors — has been criticized for its environmental harm and disruption in increasingly higher density neighborhoods.
This joss paper bin prototype lends a solution as a translation of the ritual custom to a digital medium. Living relatives may insert money and digitally burn their ancestor offerings, minimizing damage to others in the city ecosystem while paying their respects. Through technology, can and will our traditions evolve with us?
